The WhatsApp messenger has an additional protection system based on Touch ID and Face ID technologies. In view of the constant growth of requirements for the security of user correspondence, such data protection has become a logical step in the development of the service.
However, as the developers of the messenger said, the function of restricting access to the application by means of a password, Touch ID or Face ID became available in the latest update of the application (version 2.19.20) only for iPhone users.
The user can turn on the biometric system at will, the application will be blocked depending on the settings – immediately after exiting the messenger or after a selected time period.
The authorization process in the messenger follows the same scenario as in well-known banking mobile applications. When you start the messenger, a window appears for authentication via Touch ID or Face ID. At the same time, the user is not limited only to biometric authorization, the developers also provide the ability to enter a previously set digital password.
You can activate the new function in the application menu. To do this, go to “Settings” -> “Account” -> “Privacy” -> “Screen lock”. Here you can also specify the period of time after which the application will again require authorization.
As users have already found out, unfortunately, in the current revision of the messenger, the developers did not implement the ability to selectively block certain chats.
It is also noted that you can still view notifications on the lock screen, as well as respond to messages via quick actions, without looking at the enabled biometric authentication in the application.
The fact that the development team of the WhatsApp messenger is working on a blocking function with support for biometric identification became known back in October 2018. However, the corresponding update was released only now.
